Shavuot(五旬節 )

Shavuot

The Jewish holiday of "Shavuot" (which means "weeks" in Hebrew) is coming this week. It is a two-day holiday that comes after the Passover and then after seven Sabbaths (that is, seven weeks) each year.

The significance of Shavuot is to commemorate the the glorious time when G-d gave the holy Torah to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai more than 3,000 years ago.

On the first night of the holiday, the Torah is studied all night long, and on the following day, a "Yizkor" prayer service is performed to publicly mourn the loss of Jews who have passed away.

Foods eaten during that time often center around dairy products, because milk is seen as a symbol of the Torah as it nurishes us the same way milk does for a baby.
