Israel’s 78th Independence Day Celebration
【Israel’s 78th Independence Day Celebration | An Evening of Friendship, Gratitude, and Legacy】
On June 10, the Jeffrey D. Schwartz Jewish Community Center was honored to host the celebration of Israel’s 78th Independence Day, organized by the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei.
Unlike a traditional diplomatic reception, this year’s event offered a unique and immersive experience. Upon entering the JCC, guests were welcomed not by a conventional banquet setting, but by a vibrant Israeli-style marketplace. Through five thoughtfully curated thematic areas featuring authentic cuisine, cultural stories, and interactive experiences, visitors were invited to explore Israel’s history, innovation, cultural diversity, and everyday life.
Distinguished guests from government, diplomatic, academic, business, and cultural sectors gathered to celebrate the 78th anniversary of the State of Israel. Yet this evening commemorated more than the birthday of a nation.
For many in attendance, it was also an occasion filled with gratitude, reflection, and warm wishes for the future.
In her remarks, outgoing Representative Maya Yaron reflected on the journey that Taiwan and Israel have shared over the past three years. From cultural exchanges and educational cooperation to technological innovation, tourism growth, and people-to-people connections, she shared stories that illustrated the deepening friendship between the two societies.
Among the most moving moments of the evening was her tribute to Mr. Jeffrey D. Schwartz, Founder of the JCC.
Representative Yaron remarked that every diplomat hopes to encounter someone like Mr. Schwartz in their host country. Over the years, he has dedicated himself to fostering understanding and cooperation between Taiwan, Israel, and the global Jewish community, creating opportunities for people from different cultures and backgrounds to meet, engage, and build meaningful relationships.
She further noted that, in many ways, Mr. Schwartz has served as a de facto ambassador for Israel in Taiwan.
This recognition was not merely a tribute to an individual, but also an acknowledgment of many years of commitment to cultural exchange and mutual understanding.
Throughout the years, the JCC has welcomed visitors, delegations, and cultural events from around the world. Here, people have discovered Jewish culture, gained a deeper understanding of Israel, and formed friendships that transcend language and borders. Many meaningful partnerships and collaborations have begun with a guided tour, a shared meal, or a sincere conversation.
The evening also marked the introduction of Israel’s incoming representatives, symbolizing a new chapter in the ever-growing relationship between Taiwan and Israel.
Friendship is never built overnight. It is a legacy passed from one generation to the next.
As celebration, culture, and heartfelt farewells came together under one roof, guests witnessed not only Israel’s remarkable 78-year journey, but also the enduring friendship between Taiwan and Israel—and the way that friendship continues to be carried forward by those committed to building bridges between people.
May this bridge continue to connect more hearts and communities, and may the friendship between Taiwan and Israel continue to flourish for many years to come.
