Rosh Hashanah 5784 Celebration is Coming Soon!
Dear friends,
Time flies, and another year is about to pass. JTCA invites everyone to join us in welcoming and celebrating the arrival of the Jewish year 5784, also known as Rosh Hashanah!
Rosh Hashanah, also referred to as the "Yom Teruah". It's one of the most significant festivals in Judaism. It marks the beginning of a new year, symbolizing G-d's promise of a fresh start and blessings. It is a time for gratitude, reflection on the past year's mistakes, and seeking forgiveness.
On this day, the sound of the shofar, a ram's horn, is blown multiple times to remind people to reflect on their actions, repent for their shortcomings, and anticipate the coming of the Messiah. People gather together to recite prayers and scriptures, thanking G-d for his blessings in the past year and seeking peace, health, and happiness for the new year. Apples and honey are also shared as a symbolic gesture for a fruitful and fortunate year ahead, filled with hope and goodness.
As the Jewish New Year commences, the Jewish community engages in ten days of introspection and repentance, leading up to the solemn occasion of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Prior to Yom Kippur, individuals enter Synagogues to engage in focused and sincere prayers, seeking forgiveness for their past transgressions and yearning for G-d's pardon and mercy.
JTCA cordially invites you to celebrate this special occasion and participate in our upcoming Rosh Hashanah event! It’s scheduled to take place on September 15th at the JCC.
Join us and the members of the Jewish community for a joyous time, guided by our Rabbi Shlomi, to experience the sacredness and significance of this ancient traditional festival.
It will be a day filled with love, blessings, andcultural exchange. Whether you are of the Jewish faith or not, we warmlywelcome you to join us with an open heart in welcoming the Jewish year 5784.
The Taipei Old Building New Life Award-A Journey of Achievements and Anticipation
An ancient Chinese proverb once said, 'if the flowers are in full bloom, the butterflies will come.' This timeless wisdom resonates deeply within us, as we witness its truth unfold time and time again. The JTCA has dedicated itself to the promotion and advancement of culture, education, religion, and the holistic well-being of individuals. Our first monumental endeavor was the establishment of the awe-inspiring and sacred 'Jeffrey D.Schwartz Jewish Community Center' in Taiwan. Our humble efforts here, though silent, have not gone unnoticed by the world.
With the opening of Taiwan's borders, we joyously welcomed journalists and tourists from every corner of the globe, as local and international media eagerly reported. But what truly exceeded our expectations was the historic event we had the honor of hosting - the inaugural Rabbi Conference in Taiwan, personally graced by Rabbi David Lau, Israel's Chief Rabbi, and Rabbi Kotlarsky of New York. These were remarkable achievements we never could have imagined.
As if these blessings were not enough, our architectural marvel has garnered international acclaim, receiving prestigious accolades such as the IF Design Award and the esteemed Italian 'A' Design Award.
Now, we find ourselves filled with delight as we participate in the esteemed 'Taipei Old Building New Life Award' competition. This noble competition seeks to preserve the cultural heritage of traditional buildings in Taipei, nurturing their historical significance and inspiring their transformation into beacons of the future.
The distinctive and captivating architectural design of the'Jeffrey D. Schwartz Jewish Community Center' coupled with its profound embodiment of Jewish cultural traditions, is evident to all who behold it. We express our heartfelt gratitude to the organizers for recognizing our contributions and to everyone who affirms the value we bring.
With bated breath and anticipation, we eagerly await the announcement of the competition results in August. Will the JCC once again emerge triumphant, adorned with yet another prestigious award? The answer awaits us, shrouded in the mystery of the future.

The Jewish History —「Tish’a B’Av」
Across different cultures, numerous festivals bear stories of profound sorrow and grief. Today, we invite you to delve into what is known as "the saddest day in the Jewish calendar" – the day of the destruction of the Synagogue. This momentous occasion holds immense significance in Jewish history, evoking deep sadness as it marks the beginning of nearly two millennia of Jewish exile and diaspora.
The synagogue holds a sacred place in the hearts of Jewish people. Its origins can be traced back to the time of King Solomon of Israel, serving not only as a place of worship but also as a powerful symbol of the Jewish nation. Yet, on a fateful day in 586 BC, history witnessed a tragedy of shifting tides. The invasion of the Babylonian imperial army turned the First Temple into the epicenter of a devastating war, leading to its utter destruction.
This event became a pivotal moment in Jewish history, leaving an indelible impact on the Jewish people and fortifying their spirit of resilience and unwavering determination. In the years that followed, the Jewish community steadfastly clung to their beliefs and traditions, preserving and upholding them against all odds.
After enduring years of captivity and servitude, the Jewish people finally escaped the clutches of the Babylonian Empire over 500 years ago. They returned to their holy land, endeavoring to rebuild their homes and restore the cherished rituals and way of life central to Judaism. A paramount objective emerged – the reconstruction of the Synagogue.
However, in AD 70, the Jewish community faced yet another imperial aggression, this time from the Roman Empire. The Second Temple, painstakingly rebuilt, was again ravaged, its destruction coinciding with the same solemn date as that of the First Temple. Once more, the Jewish people were compelled to leave their homes, embarking on a prolonged period of exile spanning nearly two millennia.
The Day of the Destruction of the Temple stands as a solemn occasion, one of the most mourned in the Jewish calendar. On this sacred day, Jews observe a ceremony to lament this painful history. Fasting, prayer, the recitation of lamentations, and communal gatherings in synagogues or temples form integral parts of the commemorative activities, allowing individuals to express their condolences and pay their respects. Observance also entails adhering to a series of stringent regulations, such as refraining from wearing bright garments, bathing, engaging in intimate relations, or partaking inactivities that evoke "joy" or "pleasure” all as a sign of reverence for this day.
By mourning the anguish of the past, the Jewish people renew their faith, perpetuate their vital culture and traditions, and strive towards the construction of a more prosperous and harmonious homeland. The imprints and pain of history remain deeply etched in our collective memory. They serve as a poignant reminder, calling upon the world to recognize the horrors of war and the fragility of civilization. Regardless of our diverse races and cultures, let us cherish and treasure unity, peace, and ensure that such dark chapters of history never repeat themselves.
Warm Regards,
Jeffrey D. Schwartz & NaTang
