On September 17, the Jeffrey D. Schwartz Jewish Community Center (JCC) once again had the honor of welcoming the Israeli Knesset Taiwan Friendship Group. The delegation was led by Boaz Toporovsky (MK), and included Michal Shir Segman (MK)Debbie Biton (MK)Shalom Danino (MK)Eli Dallal (MK)Yael Ron Ben Moshe (MK), as well as parliamentary adviser Adi Shoham. This marked Boaz Toporovsky’s second visit to the JCC this year, following his trip in April.

Guided by JCC founder Mr. Jeffrey D. Schwartz, the delegation toured the Mikveh, the Synagogue, and the treasured 17th-century Torah scrolls. The members expressed admiration for the historical and artistic value of the collection. MK Shalom Danino was especially moved, describing it as “a lifetime achievement” and saying that the Synagogue’s skylight had “touched his soul.”

During the banquet, the delegation enjoyed authentic kosher cuisine—unique in Taiwan. After the meal, MK Boaz Toporovsky presented a statement signed by 72 Members of the Knesset, affirming support for Taiwan’s participation in international affairs. MK Michal Shir Segman also brought “Bring Them Home Now” necklaces, bracelets, and pins, delivering the Jewish people’s call for peace and solidarity.

That day, the JCC was not only a showcase of Jewish culture but also a stage for living testimony to Chaverut (Friendship).

In Taipei, this bond shone with a light reaching from Jerusalem. ✨

代表團由主席 Boaz Toporovsky(杜伯斯基議員) 率領,成員包括 Michal Shir Segman(希閣蔓議員)Debbie Biton(碧彤議員)Shalom Danino(丹尼諾議員)Eli Dallal(德拉議員)Yael Ron Ben Moshe(羅本茉希議員),以及國會顧問 Adi Shoham(修瀚)。

Cross-Cultural Dialogue | Exploring Jewish Heritage in Taiwan

On September 18, the Jeffrey D. Schwartz Jewish Community Center (JCC) hosted a meaningful lecture. The event began with a guided tour of the Museum of Jewish Art & Judaica by the JTCA PR team, where guests explored artifacts and stories that offered a foundational understanding of Jewish history and culture. This sense of “memory” (Zikaron) not only forms the foundation of the Jewish people but also provides context for understanding modern Israel.

Following the museum visit, Ms. Maya Yaron, representative of the Israeli Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, shared Israel’s modern development journey—from the Zionist movement and the challenges of early statehood to its present-day achievements in technology and economy—offering a clear view of how Israel progressed step by step.

After the lecture, Legislator Kuan-Ting Chen joined the discussion, highlighting the similarities between Taiwan and Israel in resilience, democratic values, and international exchange, adding depth and insight to the conversation.

With the Jewish New Year approaching, the event concluded with tea and a special treat of apples and honey, symbolizing the “sweet New Year blessing” and sharing joy with all participants—Shanah Tova!

Shanah Tova!

🔥 Oven-Roasted Spiced Salmon Head
Salmon head represents leadership and beginnings at the Rosh Hashanah table, reminding everyone to embrace new opportunities and lead the way in the year to come. Paired with carefully blended spices, its aroma symbolizes hope and abundance.

🍎 Pomegranate
A key symbol of Rosh Hashanah, the pomegranate’s many seeds represent a year filled with good fortune and blessings. Its vibrant red on the table is both delicious and a living connection to tradition.

From bread to fruit, from fish to desserts, each preparation respects tradition and conveys the anticipation of joy (Simcha) and blessings in the coming year.

This year’s Rosh Hashanah celebration at the Jeffrey D. Schwartz Jewish Community Center was more festive than ever, welcoming nearly 240 guests. It was especially meaningful to see not only members of the Jewish community but also many Taiwanese friends joining to share the joy of the holiday.

Before the festive dinner, Rabbi Shlomi and Rabbi Leivy led prayers in the synagogue, setting the evening with blessings and solemnity. The dinner featured a traditional food ritual: challah bread symbolizing wholeness and continuity, roasted salmon head representing leadership and new beginnings, and pomegranate embodying abundance and countless blessings.

To conclude, the Kosher Culinary Lab prepared a special honey cake, carrying the sweet wish for a joyful and blessed new year. Surrounded by blessings, laughter, and togetherness, the spirit of Shanah Tova filled the room with unforgettable warmth.
