Embracing the Journey: A Lecture at National Taiwan University by Jeffrey D. Schwartz
Dear friends
As the Chairman and co-founder of the Jewish Taiwan Cultural Association (JTCA), it was both an honor and a privilege to share my experiences and insights with the bright minds at National Taiwan University (NTU) during a recent lecture. The goal of my talk was simple yet profound: to inspire students to step out of their comfort zones and embrace the journey of self-discovery and entrepreneurship.
I began by sharing my own personal journey, a tale of departing from the predetermined path set by my family. Coming from a background of a rather successful business, my father envisioned a future where I would step in his shoes. However, I had different motivations. Opting for a less conventional path, I ventured to India, embracing a lifestyle of simplicity while studying Buddhism. This phase of my life was a testament to the idea that familial expectations should not confine one's dreams.
When arriving to Taiwan, with the support of my father, I later found myself in a job that I disliked. It was a pivotal moment when I recognized the opportunities that a growing economy presented. Subsequently, I founded the Fourstar Group, a company, driven by a vision to create high quality products at below market prices, thus contributing to the betterment of society by allowing those on a limited income enjoy purchasing safely and with less strain on their finances.
One key message I wanted to convey to the students was the importance of challenging societal norms and familial expectations. It's okay not to conform to predetermined paths; instead, find your passion and create your own journey. My own experiences reflected the idea that success often comes when you dare to step out of the comfort zone and find your passion.
Reflecting on my academic years, I wasn't really the "best student," not even close. Unlike the conventional pursuit of straight A's, I usually aimed for a passing grade. I firmly believe that grades do not define a person's success. Finding the right path for yourself, and then putting in hard work and perseverance, can lead to remarkable accomplishments later in life, even if you have average grades.
The lecture was a wonderful opportunity to engage with the students at National Taiwan University (NTU), and I am grateful for the invitation from Vice President Prof. Ting of NTU. The JTCA remains committed to promoting cultural, educational, and holistic humanistic development. Our mission is to contribute to the heritage of Taiwan, and I hope that my sharing has added helpful insights to the journey of the students present.
As we continue to create more possibilities for the future of Taiwanese students, I look forward to witnessing their growth and success. May they carry forward the love and blessings shared by JTCA, embracing their unique qualities, and creating a future that reflects the spirit of courage, curiosity, and resilience.

Illuminates Taipei at the Hanukkah Celebration!
As the year comes to an end, the festival of lights approaches, and the Jewish community in Taiwan eagerly anticipates the annual Chanukah celebration hosted by Chabad Taiwan. This year's lively gathering is scheduled for Sunday, December 10th, at Taipei City Hall Plaza, located at the corner of SongZhi R.& SongShou Rd. The festivities aim to unite people in celebrating the rich history and traditions of Chanukah.
"Chanukah"means "dedication" in Hebrew and is named so because it commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The festival centers around the story of a small quantity of oil that miraculously burned for eight days, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and the resilience of the Jewish spirit. People will celebrate for eight days with nightly menorah lighting, special prayers, and fried foods.
The celebration is a joyful event that highlights the universal message of Chanukah. Attendees can partake in activities such as lighting the menorah, singing traditional songs, and savoring festive foods. The event aims to foster a sense of togetherness and happiness among the diverse community members attending.
This year's celebration takes place at Taipei City Hall Plaza, providing a central and accessible location for participants. The choice of venue emphasizes the inclusive nature of the event, inviting individuals from all walks of life to join in the festivities. We would like to express special thanks to the Taipei City Police Department for actively securing the event, ensuring that everyone can partake in the celebration without any concerns.
As the menorah is kindled, it not only symbolizes the historical events of Chanukah but also serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for the future. Through cultural exchange and shared celebrations, events like the annual Chanukah gathering contribute to building bridges of understanding and fostering a sense of community.
Mark your calendars for Sunday, December 10th, 4:00 PM, and join Chabad Taiwan in illuminating Taipei City with the warmth and joy of Chanukah. Let us come together to celebrate the Festival of Lights, spreading the message of unity, resilience, and the triumph of light over darkness.
Warm Regards,
Jeffrey D. Schwartz & NaTang
